Walk straight into the fire -
of your life.

Let it burn you.  Consume you.

Know, already -
"You" will not survive.

But if you refuse, you will
surely die -

cold and useless
as an unlit candle.

Then, my friend, what was the point?

When there danced in your heart
a flame of purest gold.

Poetry by Renée Hummel

Notes: This ecstatic poem - which some listeners have tried to attribute to Rumi! - makes use of the universal symbol of fire as transformational, purifying agent, coupled with the encouragement of invitation, and innate possibility of change. Christians, Sufis, Pagans, Mystics of all sorts and even Agnostics, Atheists and Secular Humanists can probably agree on this symbolism - even if they don't all relish the idea of burning. And who is the "you" that will not survive? Is this the body, the ego, the sense of separate self, the sense of any identity beyond the One, or something else? One beauty of poetry is that it leaves these interpretations up to the reader.
